Hendrik Biebouw

There is some confusion about this name as the French wiki lists it as Hendrik Bideault. The confusion is the "d" becomes a "b" in the Afrikaans spelling. I am however not too confused about the rest of the spelling as "ouw" is the Afrikaans spelling for the French "eault" or "o" sound as in "no". The name Bideault is a French name as Hendrik Biebouw / Bideault was probably of French Huguenot descent. I remember reading in the book Ces français qui ont fait l'Afrique du Sud that the first person to refer to himself as an African or Afrikaner was a person of French Huguenot decent. So Hendrik Biebouw would appear to fir the bill. Though I can not remember if he was specifically named in the book as I read it a long time ago. There were a number of French Huguenot surnames which took on a Dutch / Afrikaans spelling -like Pinard: Pienaar / Lombard: Lombaar / Villion: Viljoen / Gauch: Gouws while many retained their original spelling such as Naude / Malan / Le Grange / Marais / Joubert.
